Croft Juniors vs ASC Youth
6th Mar 2011

After the last few games where we have struggled to keep our shape, Nick and I decided to try the team in a new formation for this game against Croft Juniors. We have been struggling with not having enough cover defensively and this has led to teams scoring a number of break away goals against us.

The formation we went with this week was to have 3 defenders and 3 midfielders. With no out and out striker, we encouraged the 3 midfielders to go forward but to make sure at least one was always covering.

The formation seemed to be working well in the first have and this is the best I have seen the team play. Everyone was holding their positions and we were keeping goal side of the opposition. Cian produced one of the best saves that I have seen and he seems to be developing into a very good goalkeeper.

Both teams had chances on goal but we managed to come in at half time with the lead.

In the second half we made a few changes to the team and swapped players around. This seemed to disrupt us and we struggled again with our positional play. When we got hold of the ball we found it hard to make ground into the other half and Croft spent a lot of the second half attacking our goal. We conceded a penalty and a couple of break away goals.

I think this was a marked improvement on recent performances and I am looking forward to trying this formation out again.
