Wootton Bassett 3 - 2 ASC Youth
8th Nov 2009

Another tough fixture, this time away to a Wootton Bassett team who have started the season well and it was made even tougher with the news that Warren, our GK, was suffering from Pleurisy and Jack our left mid player had a virus which meant that neither would take part, add to this the fact that Jamie wasn’t feeling 100% and would later be sick on the pitch and I had that all familiar feeling that this season was going to continue to be a tough one for us.

So with all this in mind we had to move a few players around and experiment a bit and I was pleased with the way we started the game. Our usual neat passing game started to frustrate Bassett early on and we managed to take the lead midway through the first half after some excellent approach play from Will who put Kez into a great goalscoring position. Kezza’s fierce shot was saved well by the Bassett keeper but fell at the feet of Ciaran who tapped it into an empty net. This settled us down a bit and although the match was end to end at this point, Bassett couldn’t capitalise on the chances they did create.

Into the second half and we scored again to make it 2-0 when Kezza’s shot was again saved and this time it fell to Benn who made no mistake. But then a number of individual errors and forced changes allowed Bassett back into the game and at 2-2 it could have gone either way with both teams missing good chances. But this was to be Bassett’s day as they managed to score late on after a goalmouth scramble.

The lads couldn’t be faulted for commitment today and again played some good football, but with everything going against us at the moment we have to dig in and get ourselves through this rough period and hopefully start getting a bit of luck again. As long as we can remain playing the attractive style of football we’ve always played we will continue to win more than we lose and with every team beating each other at the moment there is still everything to play for and what could be better than a tasty encounter against unbeaten Cirencester next on the cards!!

As mentioned in previous match reports, the loss of a number of players to academies from the top teams during pre season has definitely brought the standard of all the teams down to the same level which in the long term should see our players benefit as there won’t be easy games in this league any more and all our players will now be stretched to their limits every week. This in turn should aid their development even further and help them to become even better players.
