Bassett Rangers U14 1 - 3 ASC Youth

Due to the start of our season being delayed for a week with our proposed opponents (Stratton Juniors) pulling out of the league at the last moment. I was keen for us to play one last friendly match before our season kicks off. So I decided to arrange a game against our good friends Bassett Rangers U14’s.

I purposely wanted to test us against physically stronger opposition and the difference between U13’s and U14’s is now quite evident, with Bassett Rangers having 3 or 4 very strong, physical players. However in Perry, Joe E, Joe P and Ed we also have a very physical backbone to our team, so tonight was going to be interesting, especially since BR have added a lot of quality to their team over recent seasons.

ASC started the match brightly with a few testing efforts on the BR goal and again we started players in different positions to those they normally play in to assess what cover we have in each position. Danny slotted into left back very comfortably and went on to have his best game by far for us tonight, with some cool defending and excellent distribution. Ed also featured heavily in the first half with some very good link up play and movement.

ASC opened the scoring after Kezza came off the bench to net with his first touch after Danny whipped the ball across the face of goal. Then Ed played a neat ball through to Kez who outpaced his marker before curling his shot into the top corner.

Into the second half and Aaron was unlucky not to make it 3-0 with a fine driven shot which was tipped onto the bar from the keeper and then a clever short corner produced another bullet strike, this time from Joe E which again hit the bar. Joe was now starting to show his domination on the game and soon made it 3-0 after a neat combination between him and Ed, however there was still quite a bit for Joe to do but he made it look easy, skipping past 2 players before prodding the ball past the keeper.

Towards the end BR managed to pull a goal back with a well taken goal, but this didn’t overshadow what was another very fine performance.
