ASC played really well in our match against Wootton Bassett today, but once again, as last week, we were unlucky not to come away with anything to show for all our hard work!!
Bassett, like Chiseldon are currently enjoying a good season and are probably one of the top teams around at the moment. So to play them straight after losing to Chiseldon was going to be another real test of character. But if these two teams are the current best, then we showed today and last week that we’re not a million miles away from competing with them and we’re definitely getting closer again with each game we play.
Within the first 20 minutes of the match we found ourselves 2-0 down, but the effort and passion we showed again couldn’t be faulted and this resulted in us clawing our way back into the game before half time with goals by Aaron and Kez.
We went into the second half feeling fairly confident and to be honest there was nothing between the 2 teams at this stage with both being guilty of missing good chances. However it was Bassett who struck early in the second half scoring what turned out to be the match winner. It was pleasing to see that for the second week in a row we didn’t give up and kept battling right to the end which again resulted in us finishing the game the stronger of the 2 teams.
This season was always going to be a rebuilding one for us after changing so much of our personnel due to players moving on and injuries. But I feel we’ve got over the worst of things now and there are clear signs that we are slowly but surely getting back to the standard we need to be at to compete with the other teams around us.
There is one thing our players and parents should remain proud of though and that is that we are a club which always strives to do things the right way, not only on the pitch but just as importantly off it and this is something that not every other club in this league can boast!!
