Shrivenham & Watchfield 3 - 4 ASC Youth
18th Oct 2009 - Cup 2nd round

A return to league cup action for last seasons beaten finalist’s, saw ASC handed a tough away draw against Shrivenham & Watchfield.

The game kicked off ‘in the sunshine’ with Razer in goal, a defensive pairing of Kezza and Rhys, midfield trio of Ollie, James and Ash with Tyler up front. A fairly scrappy start to the game for the first 10 minutes saw a couple of half chances for both sides. Neither side were particularly dominant during this period. An ASC attack saw us losing possession of the ball with Shrivenham hitting us on the break, outnumbered 4 against 2 the defence had little chance and Shrivenham broke the deadlock. Shrivenham 1 – 0 ASC. Unfortunately, only a few more minutes passed when virtually the same thing happened again. Shrivenham 2 – 0 ASC. The ASC lads had not clicked into gear yet and were in danger of throwing the game away in these early stages. The first half progressed with James coming off to protect his injury from Saturdays training and being replaced with Tom. Ash switched to central midfield with Ollie on the left and Tom on the right. ASC kept their heads up and started to click through the gears forcing some really good saves from the Shrivenham keeper. ASC were creating more chances now, Tyler being unlucky on a couple of occasions, Ashley floating a free kick just over the bar and numerous corners piling on the pressure. The ASC pressure finally paid off as Tyler bagged two great goals with clinical finishing into the bottom corners of the goal. Half time and ASC had recovered to 2 – 2.

The second half saw ASC continue their momentum. The defence of Kezza and Rhys were resolute at the rear, the wide midfield of Tom and Ollie were working hard supporting the ASC attacks and also our defence when the play broke down. Ash was controlling the centre of the park and Tyler was causing constant problems for the Shrivenham defence, especially from Razer’s excellent kick outs on a very small pitch. Mid way through the first half saw the first tactical swap. Ollie, carrying a knock to his ribs came off for a rest; James replaced him on the left wing, with everyone crossing their fingers that his injury would be OK. After a few minutes a ball from the right found James clear near the penalty spot to slot the ball home. Shrivenham 2 – 3 ASC, “an inspired substitution, Alex Ferguson would have been proud of” well that’s how Joe put it anyhow! Shock, horror when minutes later a through ball from Shrivenham saw their striker latch on to it and hit a shot from the edge of the box, Razer came off his line and managed to get finger tips to it, but the ball found its way into the ASC net. Shrivenham 3 – 3 ASC, we never do it the easy way! Tom, who had put in a great shift on the right, was replaced with Ollie. A long kick out from Razer, Tyler using the weight of the ball to spin around the defender, when he was brought down. An ASC free kick was awarded, 15 metres from goal. James takes the free kick and curls it straight into the top corner, un-stoppable! Shrivenham 3 – 4 ASC. ASC continued to attack with plenty of good play, James dominant down the left wing, Ollie’s ‘outside hook’ turn sending the defender the wrong way, Tyler’s shot which cannoned off the post, Kezza heading just wide at the far post from a corner, Rhys also heading just wide, Ash’s superb cross ball switch to Ollie, Tyler driving a ball across the goal mouth with Ollie stretching and only millimetres away from tapping it in, to name just a few!! The game was nearing a close when the Shrivenham keeper collided with Ollie and tripped him inside the box, with ball almost out of play. The referee awarded a penalty which was a brave but technically correct decision by the young ref. Ash struck the ball well but the Shrivenham goalkeeper made another great save to get across to it. Thankfully the game was nearing a finish and ASC played out a deserved win, allowing Joe’s heart-rate to return to normal. A very good performance in the end, the boy’s showed great team spirit to come back from a dreadful start.

Well done to everyone and a special thanks to Tom, hope you enjoy your holiday and your new school.
