After some goods performances and results of late we were definitely brought right back down to earth with a bump today by our old rivals Chiseldon. From the first kick of the game it was evident that this wasn’t going to be a good day for us as Chizzy came flying out of the blocks and caught us napping.
In previous encounters between ourselves and them, my preferred formation always seemed to work well for us. But in the first 5 minutes of this match I realised that we were losing the battle in certain areas of the pitch and slight adjustments had to be made to try and counter this. However Chiseldon had their tails up by now and they went on to dominate the majority of the game as they seemed to have the greater desire.
We never really managed to get going today and too many of our players had an off day. Add to this the fact that we had two debutants playing and another who has only played one full game for us and I can now see that this result wasn’t really the shock that everyone thought it was. The biggest disappointment for me today was our lack of discipline in certain areas. Too many players thought they could do what they wanted to do, instead of doing the job they’d been asked to do and this loss of shape and chasing the ball into areas we didn’t need to chase into is what cost us the 2 goals and ultimately the game.
On reflection, the fact that we have lost a quarter of our team (Callum, Jacob, Joe and Curtis) to Swindon Town over the last year, although being a great achievement, has probably had a bigger impact on us than first thought and it’s going to take a while for us to bed in the new players and to try to recapture the form and the standard of previous seasons.
But this, in my opinion is a good thing, as the league is now probably tighter than it has ever been in previous seasons and I now feel that any one of around 4 or 5 teams stands a chance of winning the league, as opposed to other seasons where it had always been a two horse race. This has got to be good for the development of the players and for myself as a coach as things will be a lot tougher from now on and how we adapt to this will determine how well we do not only in this season but in future seasons also. The teams who have managed to keep their squads intact over the last few years and not lose players to pro clubs will now start to benefit from ours and Chiseldon’s situation and it will definitely make things a hell of a lot more exciting!
