With Melksham Town forfeiting their County Cup first round match against us, this left us with no game on Sunday and after our poor performance last week, it was important for us to get straight back out there and play again. Therefore I managed to get an invitation into a four way academy tournament, which I thought would really test us. This was a bit of a gamble as after last week it could have gone one of two ways, we could have played as poorly as last week and our confidence would have been affected even more or we could rise to the challenge and put last week firmly behind us. As I predicted, the lads rose to the challenge and even bettered the expectations I had by winning the tournament.
In the first game we were drawn against Worcester City who I’d been told were one of the best academy teams in the area. As if this wasn’t enough to contend with we also faced strong wind and rain in our faces for the full 25 mins and went 1-0 down to a speculative wind assisted lob from 30 yards. However we showed bags of character by fighting our way back into the game to equalise after Josh got a final touch to Perry’s long range effort to divert the shot past the keeper.
Final Score: ASC Youth 1 – 1 Worcester City
Yate Town were our second opponents and this was another tight game with not much difference between the two teams. However we managed to play some good football in this game which Yate couldn’t cope with at times, this along with our physical presence was enough to secure a 1-0 win. Josh playing the second half in goal made a good save before going route one with his kick. The ball bounced over the Yate back four and Kez finished well with a neat lob over the advancing keeper.
Final Score: ASC Youth 1 – 0 Yate Town
Into the last game and this time we took on Bath City needing only a draw to win the competition. We dominated this game and went 1-0 up when Jack’s persistence paid off and his shot sneaked in at the near post. We had chances to increase the score and looked pretty comfortable until a rash challenge conceded a late penalty and set up a nervy last few minutes.
Final Score: ASC Youth 1 – 1 Bath City
Today proved to be a really worthwhile exercise as we not only put behind us last weeks bad performance, but we actually went out and showed we can compete with 3 very good academy teams. There were very good performances from every single one of our players today, but in particular I thought our back four of Ed, DC, Jamie and Matty were outstanding, whilst it was also good to see our new players Warren, Benn and Will given the chance to show their quality against good opposition.
