Ramsbury 2 - 3 ASC Youth
29th Jan 2012

Good win today lads, well done!

A much improved attitude and approach by all of you to get a deserved win, with a scoreline not really reflecting the dominance and good football played.

Craig explained that a few changes would be made during the game, not solely based on performance, but also to see how different lads performed in different positions. We're playing for a good finishing position in the league now. Zac started in the centre of defence and performed well, with Jon and Joe putting in good performances alongside. Aaron moved up into the middle with Jack and Sean on the wings, and Nathan and Harry upfront. Tom, Jay and Owen to come off the bench also.

A good start by the boys saw some bright attacking football, with the ball being moved around really well on a sticky pitch. 2 early goals were disallowed for offside decisions, but the good thing is that the ball ended up in the net in the first place, always a good sign! More pressure saw the Ramsbury goalkeeper, who had a very good game, push the ball onto a post , but everyone froze and watched the ball bobble around rather than pounce on the opportunity, a good missed chance.

The talking was much better amongst everyone also. Ramsbury having survived a lot of early pressure slowly edged back into the game and had a few breakaways that were stopped well. A couple of the lads were taking the 'chivalry' a bit too literally and seemed hesitant to put a solid tackle in on Maisie, as ''she's a girl'' , apart from Joe and Aaron who saw the situation correctly to put a halt to some promising runs from her.

From the back to the front some good football was being played and after a good move forward, another good penalty shout was awarded, Harvey stepped up, 0-1

Moments later Ramsbury showed they were up for a game by forcing a corner, which ran low through our box completely missed by everyone. Warning. Ramsbury kept up some pressure and forced an equaliser when 2 players were allowed to run into the box completely unchallenged, 1-1.

A good reaction from the boys though saw them fightback up to half time. Second half started as the first did, a lot of good ASC pressure. A shot cleared off the line and a couple more good saves from the Ramsbury keeper kept things level, but more pressure resulted in the ball arriving at Harry's feet, who smashed it into the back of the net, a good finish by the Man of the Match, 1-2

A lot more good moves followed with blocked shots, keeping Ramsbury in it. A free kick well held by Harvey was released down the field, taken down nicely by Tom, who linked with Harry, Sean, and Jack, resulting in a corner. NICE football. This corner was attacked well, rather than watched, and Sean got himself into double figures this season 1-3 Ramsbury refused to give up though and had a couple more attacks, one needing a good save at his near post by Harvey, who didnt really have a whole lot to do in all honesty. Another good move was started by Owen with a header out to Jay on the wing, and the link play ended with a good cross being put in, which Owen of all people had followed in and got a foot to, going agonisingly just wide, with just about everyone wishing it in. Unlucky. A last minute breakaway by Ramsbury found a long ball missed, and ended up with the ball in the back of the net, 2-3 , offside being totally missed by the referee's assistant IAN , ( only joking) As already noted, the scoreline doesnt go close to reflecting the dominance and opportunities created. So well done to all of you.Everyone played a good solid part in a well earned victory.

The football played was great to watch, some very good passing and movement. Only a little spell in the first half where it became a bit of hot potato and a bit panicky, but this passed very quickly. When you take a breath, and relax, the game is so much easier.

Only 2 items of note to watch out for,

Waiting for the ball - We have to stop waiting for the ball to arrive at our feet rather than attacking the space its going to. This may well be down to practising on astro where it does fizz to feet. But we need to watch out for this.

Ducking out of headers and waving feet - This is becoming a bit of a chestnut. With the exception of 2 or 3 , everyone seems to duck out or prefer to wave a foot at the ball when the easier option is to put your head on it, or chest control it. This needs you to think and some working on.

But never mind, ENJOY the win , know you can win, believe you can win. This is Division 1 football, a GOOD standard of football from top to bottom, no easy games, where the margin between winning or losing is sometimes only a small one. Your development is ensuring the margin stays small and gets smaller, The Wins WILL follow,
